kana app is back babey!

i've been kinda busy recently1 so i've not been able to really get as much stuff done as i'd like, but i did at least find some time to finally port the last of the apps from the old version of this site: the kana app

it's a kana learning tool based on an old flash app2 that i used and found really helpful when i was learning to read kana back in early 2019. at the time, the death of flash was already looming and i'd also started teaching myself web dev so it kinda just lined up perfectly to try recreating it as my first react app. unfortunately by the time i'd finished i'd already got kana pretty much nailed down, so i've not used it a whole lot myself.... but i've heard other people have found it useful so i've been making sure i port it to each new incarnation of the Cool Goth Zone3

right now it's missing instructions4 so here's the gist of it,

playing the game:

  1. choose a mode (hiragana or katakana) to start the game
  2. click and drag each card into the box next to the corresponding romaji
  3. when all cards are matched, u win :)

other stuff:

  • click restart to start a new game with the selected kana set
  • click stop to stop the current game and go back to the selection screen
  • if u don't wanna practice all the kana, u can click each group on the selection screen to toggle it on or off

hopefully folks continue to find it useful. & btw it (probably) doesnt work on mobile yet sorry!! i'll try and fix it soon if i have time but til then the old version should work if u want it on ur phone ;) UPDATE 05/11/24: i just did a tiny update that should make the drag and drop stuff work on mobile now! but it might not fit on ur screen properly still yet sorry!!!

  3. this is actually the third version of the app: the first was a standalone react app on the original, fully static cool goth zone, and the second is part of the single page react app nightmare that now lives at old.coolgoth.zone ↩

  4. the sound and dance apps are missing instructions too... i'll add them soon..... hopefully....... ↩
